So, before we get into what I thought about this book, I want you to know that I given a digital version of this book for free from the author (Victoria DeLuis) in exchange for an honest review as part of her Advanced Reading Team.

So what’s this book about?

Taken is the first book in a new series – Rune Witch Mysteries  – an urban fantasy/ paranormal mystery that blends our modern ideas about witchcraft and magic with Welsh mythology. Taken is a novella (approx 87 pages) set in modern day Wales, UK, featuring our leading lady and rune witch, Summer Daniels, her long time boyfriend, Thomas Heart, who is human and a master in the martial art of Krav Magna, as well as a host of supernatural beings including house fairies, goblins and witches.

If you’ve read any of my reviews before, you’ll know that I don’t post spoilers of any kind or reveal any plot twists in my book reviews, so here’s what the official blurb has to say about the story:

There’s always a price to pay with magic. The question is, who pays?

I’m Summer Daniels. Friend. Foe. Witch.

It was never going to be a simple day: visiting my childhood home and finding the murderer of a house fairy. Whose master happens to be a heartless goblin… Yet, as it turns out, the goblin is the least of my problems.

A lover endangered. A friend betrayed. A memory taken.

The cards are stacked against me but hell hath no fury like an angry Witch.

I’m Summer Daniels and my life is about to change.

So, what did I like about it?

Victoria DeLuis is not a new-to-me author; I’ve read A Matter of Death (Independent Necromancers’ Bureau #1) and although it’s in a genre that I usually avoid (steampunk/historical), I was surprised when I actually enjoyed it and thought it was a good story, so I already knew I liked Ms DeLuis’ writing style before I read the first line of Taken.

Don’t be put off that Taken is only a novella; the writing style, plot development and characters all impressed me – I didn’t feel short changed. I found this book very easy read; the pace was good, the plot was intelligent, the setting was a wonderful mix of fantasy and reality. I found myself involved in the story almost from the first page – the way Ms DeLuis crafted it, sparked my interest.

I liked the way that we were introduced to our two main characters, got to know their personalities and what they did for a living in the very first chapter. I enjoy a story more if the lead female character is intelligent, resilient and has a good sense of humour and I wasn’t disappointed here. Summer Daniels was all of these and more. I appreciated the fact that Sarah and Thomas were already in a long term relationship; their love, companionship and loyalty to each other felt very real for me and I loved how their back-stories were seamlessly included into the tale.

I must be honest and confess that there were a couple of scenes that brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye but fear not, avid readers, this is no romantic weepy. Like most Brits I do love a bit of banter and this story has some laughs too.

I enjoyed the twists and turns that Ms DeLuis took us on, I wasn’t ever sure how things were going to pan out but I couldn’t help turning the page to find out. As a first in series, I was bracing myself for the inevitable cliffhanger, but I am happy to confirm that the case that Sarah and Thomas are working on in this story is concluded within these pages. Woop!Woop! (‘cause you all know how I feel a about cliffhangers, grrr). I think I’m going to enjoy this new series.

So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

Nope. I enjoyed every page. My only gripe was that it wasn’t longer, I was enjoying the characters and the world and I was greedy for more! Lol!

So, basically what I’m saying is…

I really loved this novella. It had everything that I look for in a story and what’s more, Ms DeLuis manages to pack it in within so few pages; mystery, action, humour and even a sprinkling of romance.

I would recommend this book to those who of you who love a mystery to solve, enjoy fantasy and adventure themes and don’t mind a bit of romance thrown in. There are no explicit or graphic violent or sexual scenes and so I feel comfortable recommending this book to anyone who likes reading paranormal mysteries.
